How to Check System Type 64-Bit or 32-Bit [Windows, Linux, macOS]

Hey Geeks, Here in this post you will learn about How to Determine if Windows, Linux, or macOS is 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64).

How to Check System Type

Definition of 32-bit

Operating system that can handle data in 32-bit chunks at a time and address up to 4 GB of RAM. It runs the basic applications, simple usable, and low-level required efficiency apps to run.

Definition of 64-bit

Operating system that can handle data in 64-bit chunks and address a much larger amount of RAM. It runs demanding applications and provides improved performance. Also, it offers enhanced security features and Hardware Compatibility.

Steps to Check System Type

Here is a step-by-step guide for Identifying the Operating System Architecture in 32-bit and 64-bit Systems. If you don’t understand these steps then you can watch the video tutorial below.

For Windows:

You have to follow these steps if you have a Windows PC or laptop:

  1. You have to simply click the start button at the bottom left corner and open “Setting“.
  2. Now, Select “About” from the left-hand side menu.
  3. Scroll to the “Device specifications” section and see the “System type” entry.
    • – If it says “64-bit operating system” it means your system is a 64-bit version of Windows.
    • – If it says “32-bit operating system” it means your system is a 32-bit version of Windows.

For Linux:

You have to follow these steps if you have a Linux system:

  1. Open a terminal window and type commands such as follows
    • Type Command: ‘uname –i’
  2. Now, Check Output
    • – If output is “x86_64,” it means your system is 64-bit.
    • – If output is “i386” or “i686,” it means your system is 32-bit.

For macOS:

You have to follow these steps if you have a macOS system:

  1. Open the Apple menu in the top left corner of the screen.
  2. Select “About This Mac“.
  3. Click on the “Overview” tab.
  4. Here, Look for the “Processor” information.
    • – If it mentions “Intel Core i3,” “Intel Core i5,” “Intel Core i7,” “Intel Core i9,” or “Apple M1,” it means your Mac is running a 64-bit operating system.
    • – If it mentions “Intel Core Duo,” “Intel Core 2 Duo,” or “Intel Xeon,” it means your Mac is running a 32-bit operating system.

Difference Between 32-bit And 64-bit Operating Systems

System type 32bit vs 64bit

32-bit Systems

A 32-bit register can theoretically refer to 4,294,967,296 bytes of Memory.

There are many software are run as beginning but ongoing and later sifted to 64-bit to improve the performance for such bulky data to analyze and work faster.

For small work and for learning things as a beginner or as a student, 32-bit is right and satisfied.

May not support Newer Hardware because it has become a traditional method to use and this generation of applications requires high capacity to run.

There is limited support for visualization.

There are limited security features added to protect at minimum risky conditions and to protect from being crashed.

Some lags appear while using multiple tasks at the same time. At that time, these 32-bit system runs with limited efficiency.

32-bit Systems are unable to play high graphics games because efficiently playing higher level games needs much usage of RAM.

64-bit System

A 64-bit register can theoretically reference 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 bytes or 17,179,869,184 GB (16 exabytes) of memory.

For office work, company data analysis, or major updates to changes for public usage, we need to use a large amount of RAM to use for completely make changes in bulk. for those types of changes, a 64-bit system is necessary.

This is the generation in which major works are done based on the 64-bit operating system because now it’s available on all devices and also used by nearly all people to run and improve the performance of their PC, laptop, and Mac.

Support Newer Hardware with 64-bit RAM Access to run with high efficiency.

Better support for visualization.

A 64-bit system is more expensive than a 32-bit, so it provides high-level security features, which are added to protect the device from any type of malware or attacks.

Runs multiple tasks at the same time with more efficiency.

64-bit Systems easily play high graphics games because there is a high RAM load during usage of high efficiency to play higher level games. It fulfills the condition of the requirement.

Migration from 32-bit to 64-bit

Moving from a 32-bit to a 64-bit system often requires a clean installation. We need to back up our files and reinstall software applications. Effort ensures a smooth transition.

Conclusion

Overall, There are options available to choose from based on our requirements and considering our budget-related devices.

Most people are not able to buy high-level laptops that why they prefer to 32-bit system to use and make their work from them.

On the contrary, More important works need more capacity to store at a time to use a huge amount of memory in RAM. The 64-bit system made this easy level and helps it to work smoothly. Both options are best but the requirement fulfills the desires.

There are all things added to choose your System requirement and buy one for you.
